BEIJING, Jan. 15 -- A group of Taiwan disease-control experts have visited Wuhan to learn about their mainland counterparts' work of containing the epidemic of a new viral pneumonia in the city, a mainland official said Wednesday.

The experts were in Wuhan on Monday and Tuesday to learn about the work on epidemic prevention and control, response measures, medical treatment and pathogen tests, Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a regular press conference.

The experts conducted exchanges with their mainland counterparts and visited disease control and medical institutions, Ma said, adding that they expressed their gratitude for the reception by the mainland.

Chinese mainland has paid close attention to the health and wellbeing of compatriots across the Taiwan Strait and has notified Taiwan about the latest developments of the epidemic multiple times in a timely manner, Ma said.

The viral pneumonia in Wuhan was caused by a new-type coronavirus, according to the preliminary lab results.

As of Monday, local authorities have confirmed 41 cases of the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, of which seven have been cured and discharged from hospital, six classed as severe and one was dead. A tourist from Wuhan was confirmed in Thailand as being infected with the coronavirus, according to a statement issued by the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission.
