BEIJING, Dec. 9 -- The Chinese mainland respects the decision by Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying not to run in the next election in 2017, a mainland spokesperson said Friday.

"We express our deep regret that Leung has decided not to pursue another term due to family reasons, and we respect his decision," the spokesperson for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council said.

Since taking office as Chief Executive of Hong Kong in 2012, Leung firmly implemented the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law of Hong Kong, properly dealt with a series of major political and legal issues, and made important contributions in safeguarding national sovereignty, security, developmental interests and political stability in Hong Kong, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson hailed his accomplishments in boosting economic development, improving people's livelihood and promoting communication and cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong.

The central government has always appreciated his work and hopes he will do a good job in his remaining term, and continue to play a role in the development of Hong Kong and the nation, the spokesperson added.
