TAIPEI, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan on Wednesday reported 16 new local COVID-19 cases, the highest number of local infections reported in a single day on the island since the beginning of the pandemic, the local disease monitoring agency said.

Three of the 16 new cases were linked to an established cluster involving an arcade in Yilan County, while 10 others were contacts of a man who had been diagnosed with the virus on Tuesday.

The source of infection in the other three cases remains unknown, said the agency.

Authorities urged the public to stay vigilant, strengthen epidemic prevention measures and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Weighed down by the sudden rise in the number of locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, shares in Taiwan closed well down on Wednesday, plunging more than 4 percent.

Meanwhile, four imported cases -- three from the Philippines and one from India -- were also reported in Taiwan on Wednesday.

The total number of confirmed cases on the island has risen to 1,231, including 12 deaths, the agency said. Enditem
