TORONTO, July 5 -- Canadian smartphone pioneer Blackberry said Tuesday it will stop making its Classic model smartphone as part of its effort to modernize its lineup.

"The hardest part in letting go is accepting that change makes way for new and better experiences," BlackBerry chief operating officer Ralph Pini said in a blog post.

"We are updating our smartphone lineup with state-of-the-art devices," he said.

Blackberry launched the Classic in December 2014, but failed to regain the market share lost to competitors such as Apple and other Android smartphones.

In the three months ending May 31, Blackberry posted a loss of U.S. 670 million dollars.

But it promised to continue to support sales of BlackBerry 10 smartphones to customers in most markets, saying it will be releasing 10.3.3 operating system next month, with another update to be made next year.
