The Chinese mainland reaffirmed its firm opposition to military collusion between the United States and Taiwan on Wednesday, with a spokesperson condemning the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in Taiwan for acting as a "cash machine" for Washington.
Zhang Han, a spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, reiterated the Chinese mainland's consistent stance against the US arms sale to the island during a regular press briefing on Wednesday.
Zhang said the DPP authorities harbor malicious intent of seeking "independence" through military means and resisting reunification by force under the guise of so-called "defense and security".
On Friday, the island's "legislative yuan", where the opposition parties hold a majority of seats, approved a special "defense" budget bill with a ceiling of NT$780 billion ($25 billion). The approved amount is lower than the NT$1.25 trillion package originally proposed by the DPP.
In response, the DPP claimed that this could create gaps in future "defense" capabilities, arguing that opposition parties had ignored warnings from the US.
Zhang criticized the DPP authorities for squandering the hard-earned money of the Taiwan people and willingly acting as a "cash machine" for the US. She said such actions harmed the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots and undermined peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
"Our determination to resolve the Taiwan question and achieve national reunification is as solid as rock, and our capability is unshakable," she said, warning the DPP authorities that national reunification is "an unstoppable trend".
She added that no matter how many weapons the DPP authorities purchase, it will be futile and self-destructive. "It will only accelerate the downfall of 'Taiwan independence' separatism and bring it under the judgment of history and justice," she said.
Responding to questions about upcoming summit between the leaders of China and the US, Zhang said that the Taiwan question is China's internal affair, and resolving the question is a matter for the Chinese people.
"We firmly oppose the US engaging in any form of military ties with China's Taiwan region, and firmly oppose US arms sales to Taiwan," she stressed, noting that this position remains consistent and clear.
To safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, it is essential to oppose "Taiwan independence", Zhang added.
