Hong Kong Canto?pop diva and actress Anita Mui died at the age of 40 in a local hospital early on Dec.30 after a battle with cervical cancer. We pay our last respects with a look back at just some of what this warm?hearted woman achieved in just four decades.
Known as the "Madonna of Hong Kong", Mui began her career after winning a singing contest in Hong Kong in 1982. She rose to stardom with her song "Homecoming" in 1984.
Mui later turned to acting and won Taiwan's "Golden Horse" film award for best actress in 1987.
She was also known for her charity work. She set up the Anita Mui Charity Foundation in the early 1990s.
In May, already diagnosed with cancer, Anita organized a star?studded concert to show the unity and power of Hong Kong in the face of the SARS epidemic and to raise money for its victims.
In September, she announced to her inconsolable fans that she had cervical cancer and gave her final concert in November.
She failed to attend the launch of her new book on Dec. 15 and was later rushed into hospital.
A stream of local stars led by her former lover, martial arts legend Jackie Chan, paid their last respects to the star on her deathbed at Hong Kong's Happy Valley district hospital on the night of Dec. 29.
The star has fallen, but her light will shine on forever in millions of hearts.
