Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party has approved Deputy Legislative Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu's nomination for the 2016 election, at a meeting of the party's congress.
Hung will compete with the opposition Democratic Progressive Party's chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen in the election next year. Unlike previous KMT leaders who were usually from elite political families, Hung comes from the grassroots, and has worked in the education field for years.
KMT's leader Ma Ying-jeou is attending the meeting to support Hung. Following her nomination at the party congress, Hung will embark on a grassroots campaign for the 2016 election.
