BEIJING -- China welcomed a UN-brokered political deal to form a unity government in Libya and called on parties to restore peace in the country, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Some warring Libyan factions agreed late Saturday in Skhirat, Morocco on the UN-brokered political agreement despite the absence of the General National Congress (GNC), the Tripoli-based parliament.

"China supports the UN-led political dialogue in Libya and welcomes the Libyan factions to sign the political deal," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

Hua urged all Libyan parties to achieve reconciliation through continued dialogue and restore national peace and stability at an early date.

"This is in the interests of the Libyan people and contributes to regional security, stability and development," she added.

Libya, a major oil producer in North Africa, has witnessed a frayed political process since former leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled amid political turmoil in 2011.

The country is now deadlocked in a struggle between the pro-secular army and Islamist militants, which has led to a security vacuum for homegrown extremism to thrive.

The UN has brokered several rounds of dialogues between the conflicting parties since last September, but clashes have persisted despite a truce agreed upon by the warring factions.
