BEIJING -- Top political advisor Jia QinglinTuesday called for efforts to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, put forward four proposals to consolidate and strengthen cross-Strait ties when meeting with Taiwan representatives of grassroots public opinion.

First, Jia urged both sides to proceed with confidence and adhere to a path of peaceful development in cross-Strait relations.

The mainland's fundamental policies (towards Taiwan) will remain unchanged and it will continue to implement policies and guidelines to promote peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, he said.

Second, Jia urged both sides to keep to the "right track" of cross-Strait relations.

He asked both sides to deepen political trust, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and take more practical actions to create favorable conditions in addressing deep-rooted problems of cross-Strait relations.

Third, Jia called on both sides to expand exchanges and strengthen cooperation in all sectors. The mainland will support and encourage more people from both sides to carry out all forms of exchanges, he said.

Fourth, Jia urged both sides to seek a win-win situation and increase the welfare of people on both sides of the Strait.

Efforts should be made to deepen cross-Strait economic and trade cooperation and raise the competitiveness of both sides, he said.
