BEIJING -- Taiwan?s meteorological authority says Typhoon Soulik has left one dead and 21 others injured after it hit the island early Saturday morning.
Taiwan disaster emergency center said the victim was a police officer. He was hit on the head by a falling brick, but died later in hospital. The authority say Soulik hit the region between Yilan county and Xinbei city at around 3 am.
The typhoon has brought strong winds and heavy rain across the island. The strong wind toppled trees and blew off advertisement boards, causing multiple injuries. Electricity has been cut to 520,000 homes, and so far only 10,000 homes have had electricity restored. School and work have been cancelled for the day in all counties and cities in Taiwan.
China?s Meteorological Administration says Soulik will also affect parts of the mainland?s Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces. It?s center has already passed the island and is expected to hit Fujian province this afternoon.
