China hoped the United States would resolutely oppose and effectively curb the Taiwan separatist activities of Chen Shui-bian including a referendum on UN membership, said a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Xi Jinping, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks in a meeting with former US President Jimmy Carter.

Xi said the Taiwan question was related to China's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and he hoped the US would work with China to safeguard peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits.

Xi said Sino-US relations had developed further since the two countries forged diplomatic relations 28 years ago, and the common interests expanded.

"China would like to work with the US to strengthen dialogue, mutual trust and cooperation, and settle the difference to push forward the constructive relations," he said.

Carter said he was proud of what he had done in the establishment of US-China diplomatic ties. He said the US had long adhered to the one-China policy.

He was confident for China's development, and vowed to continue to push forward US-China relations.
