Shanghai to reevaluate aesthetics of its public sculptures

Updated: 05 07 , 2013 19:39
Shanghai Municipality plans to evaluate the city's eclectic collection of more than 1,000 public statues and pull down what one local newspaper bluntly called "garbage".
City planners will set up a special "jury" to be the final arbitrator of good taste on statues in the emerging international city.
An urban planning official said the special committee would take into account the opinions of artists and residents, but the final decision would rest with the government.
A recent study by the government concluded that most of Shanghai's statues lack artistic value.
