BEIJING -- China Earthquake Networks Center says a magnitude 6.7 earthquake has hit central Taiwan?s Nantou County.

The quake struck at a depth of 9 kilometers at around a quarter to two this afternoon, local time. The quake rattled the island?s capital, Taipei. It was also felt in the mainland?s southeastern provinces of Fujian and Guangdong.

Taiwan Television says the quake caused a gas explosion in central Taiwan but gave no more details. There have been no immediate reports of casualties. Out of safety concerns, the high-speed rail line in central Taiwan has been suspended.
