TAIPEI -- Local procuratorate in Taiwan's Pingtung county on Wednesday pressed homicide charges against eight Philippine Coast Guard officers involved in fatally firing upon a Taiwan fishing vessel in May.
Fishing vessel Guang Ta Hsin 28 was fired at by Philippine Coast Guard officers on May 9 in a sea area 160 nautical miles southeast of Taiwan. The attack resulted in the death of a 65-year-old Taiwanese fisherman.
The Philippine National Bureau of Investigation recommended on Wednesday the filing of homicide charges against the eight members of the Philippine Coast Guard, after an investigation.
Learning the results of the Philippine investigation, Taiwan legal authorities appealed for the Philippine judicial authorities to hand down harsh punishments to suspects based on evidence, so as to serve justice.
