TAIPEI -- Taiwan's judicial authority on Friday authorized another three-month extension of medical furlough for former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian.
The decision was made based on the Taichung Prison report and medical evaluations by a Kaohsiung-based hospital, which showed no apparent improvement in Chen's health, the judicial authority said in a statement.
The extension of the release for medical treatment on bail will expire on Aug. 4.
Chen was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2010 for embezzlement, bribery and money laundering.
The 64-year-old had repeatedly requested to be allowed to leave prison to seek medical attention as his health has deteriorated in recent years. A medical team established in December to assess his health, declared that his mental health was deteriorating and he was suffering from sleep apnea and incontinence.
He was released from Taichung Prison on one-month medical furlough on Jan. 5 and then was given a three-month extension on Feb. 4.
