TAIPEI -- Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party initiated public polls on Friday to decide if Hung Hsiu-chu, the only contender for the KMT primary, should be nominated for a Taiwan leadership bid next year.

Hung, deputy head of the island's legislature, has to secure at least 30 percent support in the polls which last from Friday to Saturday, otherwise the party will look for another candidate, according to KMT regulations.

The results, which will be based on three polls conducted by different companies, are expected to be released on Sunday. Each of the three polls needs 1,200 valid samples.

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has endorsed the candidacy of its chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen for the 2016 election on April 15.
