Victims of criminal cases in Taiwan fell 2.6 pct from Jan. to May

TAIPEI, June 18 -- The number of victims of criminal cases in Taiwan fell slightly from January to May this year to 75,513, according to data from the island's interior affairs authority Sunday.

The figure was 2.6 percent lower than the same period last year, the data showed.

Male victims outnumbered female victims during the period, the data showed, with young people aged between 18 to 23 most likely to be victimized, followed by the 24-39 age group and 40-64 group.

About 43,330 people, or 57.4 percent of the total, were victims from five major crimes that jeopardize public security, which were theft, fraud, simple assault, violent crimes and extortion, the data showed.

The number of victims of drunk driving also dropped by 20.7 percent to 1,175 people from January to May this year from a year ago.
