BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland will better protect the legitimate rights and interests of Taiwanese people doing business here, a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Fan Liqing told reporters at a regular press conference that the mainland will further implement the agreement made between the mainland and Taiwan on protecting and promoting investment, as well as revise detailed rules for the implementation of the agreement.

Fan said the mainland pays great attention to protecting the rights and interests of Taiwanese people on the mainland, and the mainland has made positive achievements in this regard.

The mainland enacted the law on the protection of investment of Taiwan compatriots in 1995 and has issued a series of detailed rules on its implementation. A working mechanism for protecting Taiwanese people's rights and interests was also established in 2007.

Fan added that in 2012, local Taiwan affairs offices on the mainland handled more than 4,400 cases involving issues regarding the protection of Taiwanese people's rights and interests. An additional 3,900 such cases were successfully resolved via coordination with other departments.
