RIO DE JANEIRO, July 19 -- Former Brazil international striker Leandro Damiao is set to rejoin his former club Internacional after a disappointing spell with Rio de Janeiro side Flamengo.
The 27-year-old was withdrawn from Flamengo's home clash against Palmeiras in Brazil's Serie A championship on Wednesday after agreeing to a year-long loan.
Damiao also attracted the interest of a club in Turkey but has been granted his wish to return to Internacional, where he scored 89 goals in 181 matches from 2010 to 2013.
Once considered one of Brazil's most promising strikers, Damiao has failed to live up to his early potential.
He endured frustrating spells at Santos - to whom he remains contracted until 2019 - Cruzeiro and Spain's Real Betis before joining Flamengo on loan last July.
He has struggled for opportunities at the Rio de Janeiro club, scoring just 11 goals from 39 appearances.
