Most of us travel once in a while and many have realized that some trips aren't very friendly to the environment. Tourism is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions, but that doesn't mean we should stop planning our next journey.

As a traveler, it is our responsibility to prevent or minimize negative impacts on the environment. It is also better if we can support the local community and economy of our destination.

Here are 10 tips for planning your next eco-friendly trip.

1. Pack light and only take things you will really need. This will not only make it easier to get around but also have less impact on the carbon emissions of your chosen transport.

2. For short trips, travel by bus or train rather than flying. When traveling by plane flying direct saves fuel rather than taking connecting/multiple flights.

3. Explore your destination on foot as much as possible. This not only saves money but also brings you closer to local people and culture. If you must rent a car choose a small one or a hybrid. Also, use local transportation, accommodation and restaurants to benefit the local economy.

4. Good drivers leave less impact. Follow old tire marks and stay on tracks. If you plan a road trip, ask family and friends to fill extra spots in the car as individual tours have a greater environmental impact than traveling in groups.

5. Avoid buying plastic water bottles. Instead, take your own bottle that can be refilled time and again. Plastic does not biodegrade.

6. Don't dispose of any garbage while on the road. Take your trash with you until you can dispose of it at an appropriate place. Take reusable bags when shopping so you don't have to ask for disposable ones.

7. Appreciate and respect nature by taking nothing but photo, and never buy endangered or threatened species from illegal hunting.

8. Choose a hotel that is eco-friendly. Find out whether the hotel is locally operated, whether it has recycling programs and whether it encourages the reuse of towels. Treat your room as if it is your own home. Turn off the TV, lights and air conditioner when going out.

9. If you choose a travel provider pick one on the basis of their eco practices. As a pioneering career, ecotourism is not yet a mainstream business in China, but professional tours, such as EcoAction, are changing the industry. Ecotourism is somehow devoted to authentic local experiences, learning purpose and the sustainable development for local community.
