BEIJING -- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit Nantou County in central Taiwan on Sunday, killing 2 and injuring 21 others. One person is still missing.
The quake struck at a depth of 9 kilometers at around a quarter to two in the afternoon. The quake rattled Taipei in north of the island. Some of the island?s roads have been blocked by landslides. Workers removed fallen rocks and repaired a damaged mountain road in Nantou, allowing more than 100 stranded tourists to pass.
The quake was also felt on the Chinese mainland in provinces of Fujian and Guangdong. Taiwan Television says the quake caused a gas explosion in central Taiwan.
