MOSCOW -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday met with visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, both pledging to broaden cooperation mainly in missile and naval technology, nuclear energy and weapons systems.
In a joint statement released after the summit, the two countries welcomed the successful testing of the Vikramaditya aircraft carrier and the handover of the Russian-built frigate Trikand to India this year.
It also hailed the achievements "in the implementation of projects to develop a fifth generation fighter jet, a multirole transport plane and the BrahMos supersonic missile."
Noting that the first joint-built power unit was launched at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant and it is being connected to the Indian power grid, Putin said Russia hopes to participate in four other power units.
Singh, in a speech delivered at Moscow State International Relations Institute, said Moscow is New Delhi's "key partner" in energy security and military hardware.
Also on Monday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin told reporters that the two sides would discuss cooperation in submarine construction during the visit of a senior Indian military delegation to Moscow in mid-November.
Indian Defense Minister A.K. Antony is expected to visit Moscow on Nov. 16.
Two working groups will meet as part of the visit -- one of them to discuss cooperation in the aviation sector, while the other to consult on shipbuilding and submarine construction, said Rogozin.
A number of joint documents have been signed following the talks between Putin and Singh.
