ANKARA, Aug. 14 -- About 400 Syrians on Thursday were relocated to tent-camps in Turkey's southeastern province of Gaziantep amid higher tensions between locals and the Syrian refugees, local Daily News reported.
The incident started with the murder of a Turkish landlord by his Syrian tenant in Gaziantep, which triggered public anger among local residents and later led to a number of attacks on Syrian houses and cars.
With the situation going from bad to worse, local officials decided to move Syrians out of the city, and put them in tent- camps as a solution for the ongoing unrest in the city.
Gaziantep Governor Erdal Ata said they have started to send around 2,000 Syrian families to the camps, adding that 25,000 Syrians will be sent to a new camp that will be built in Islahiye by October.
According to official statistics, there are over one million Syrian refugees who fled the war-torn country to neighboring Turkey, Most of them living in 22 refugee camps and cities in southeastern Turkey.
The International community urged the Turkish government to develop long-term policies to ease the integration of Syrian refugees into Turkish society as they are likely to stay in Turkey for quite some time.
