SHARAN, Afghanistan -- Some 21 militants and two policemen have been killed in clashes in eastern Afghanistan's province of Paktika, the provincial government said on Friday.

Thirteen militants and one Afghan Border Police (ABP) personnel were killed and 18 militants and one police wounded on Thursday after the militants attacked an ABP patrol in Zameen Tay area of Gomal district, it said in a statement.

"On the same day, eight militants and one police were killed while six militants sustained injuries following a skirmish at a police checkpoint in neighboring Omna district," the statement added.

Afghan security forces have assumed the full security charges from NATO and U.S. forces after the NATO-led troops have switched from combat to support role since Jan. 1.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make any comment.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since mid-April when the militant group launched a yearly rebel offensive against Afghan security forces.

In a separate development, two civilians were killed in a landmine blast in the neighboring Khost province on Thursday, officials said.
