TRIPOLI -- Four people were killed and three others were injured on Sunday in Libya's western city of Misrata in an armed attack on the city's eastern entrance, according to a local source.
"Four security personnel were killed and three others were wounded in an armed attack on Sunday by the Islamic State (IS) affiliated militants on Abu-Grin gate," a source from Misrata's local council told Xinhua.
"Initial information indicates that the armed men attacked the gate while driving two vehicles. They opened fire on security men and fled," the source added.
Misrata has been targeted several times by IS affiliates. Last week, a suicide attack on the city's western gate killed five people and injured six others.
An IS affiliate claimed on Twitter responsibility for Sunday's attack and identified the bomber as a Tunisian national.
Libya, a major oil producer in North Africa, has been witnessing a frayed political process after former leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled during the 2011 political turmoil.
The country is now deadlocked in a dogfight between the pro-secular army and Islamist militants, which has caused a security vacuum for homegrown extremism to brew.
