MERS infections in S. Korea rise to 95 with 8 new cases

SEOUL -- Eight infections with the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) were added in South KoreaTuesday, raising the total contagion number to 95 while one more death was reported, the country's health ministry said.

Among the new cases, three people were infected from the 14th patient as they stayed for two days from May 27 at the emergency room of the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

One person was infected from the 16th patient at the Konyang University Hospital in Daejeon, a city at the center of South Korea.

Those infected at the Samsung Medical Center and the Konyang University Hospital rose to 37 and 8 respectively. The rising pace at the Samsung hospital slowed after growing by 17 on Monday.

The remaining four contagions happened at three new general hospitals in Seoul and the Gyeonggi Province.

A 27-year-old man was tested positive as he stayed with the sixth patient, who already passed away, on May 26 at the Asan Medical Center in Seoul.

The sixth patient's son-in-law, 47, was diagnosed with the MERS as he stayed with his father-in-law at Yeoeuido St. Mary's Hospital in Seoul.

A 64-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man caught the virus from the 15th patient as they stayed at the Hallym University Medical Center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province along with the 15th infectee.

Meanwhile, the 47th patient died of the viral disease, raising the total death toll to seven. The 68-year-old woman contracted the virus from the 14th patient at the Samsung Medical Center, and she already suffered from valvular disease.
