PYONGYANG -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has decided to grant amnesty to convicts to mark the 70th anniversary of the country's liberation and the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea, the official KCNA news agency reported Tuesday.

The Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly promulgated on Thursday a decree for amnesty to take effect on Aug. 1, the report said.

"The DPRK Cabinet and relevant organs will take practical measures to help the released people settle down in their work and living," said the KCNA, without revealing how many people will be pardoned.

In 2012, the DPRK announced amnesty to mark the 100th birthday of late leader Kim Il Sung and the 70th birthday of late leader Kim Jong Il.
