Rainstorms kill 4, affect 800,000 in S China

NANNING, May 24 -- Four people were killed and more than 800,000 affected by heavyrainstorms that battered south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region onWednesday, the local civil affairs authority announced Sunday.As of 4:30 p.m. Sunday, about 40,000 people from nine cities had been evacuated and 60,000 hectares of crops were affected by the rainstorms, according to the regional civilaffairs department.

More than 2,000 houses collapsed and over 10,000 were damaged.

Thunderstorms are expected to hit most parts of Guangxi on Sunday night and Mondayand heavy rain is expected along coastal areas, according to the regional meteorologicalbureau.
