TAIPEI -- Taiwan witnessed the divorcement of 53,144 couples in 2014 -- nearly 146 couples each day, according to a survey from the island's internal affairs department Saturday.

An annual 0.52 percent increase of divorce rate has been observed over the past 15 years, when the peak arrived at 2013 with 64,995 couples divorcing.

The survey showed only 8.5 in 1,000 couples with both spouses being local Taiwanese ended up separated, while 23.5 in 1,000 couples with one spouse of non-Chinese had been divorced, and the separation rate for those between a Taiwanese and one from the mainland, Hong Kong or Macao was 20.9 in 1,000.

The survey also indicated the longer the couples getting married, the steadier their relationship would be. A total of 16,623 couples' marriage lasted less than five years, accounting for 31.3 percent of the total, while 22.4 percent of the divorced couples' marriage lasted from five to nine years. In all, four out of five divorced couples had been married for less than 10 years in Taiwan.
